The James Norris Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the NHL's top "defense player who demonstrates throughout the season the greatest all-round ability in the position." The Red Wings captain is the defending Norris trophy owner, having won his sixth trophy in 2008 to tie Doug Harvey for the second-most career Norris Trophies (Bobby Orr has eight). Lidstrom became the first European-born player to captain a team to a Stanley Cup championship.
