NEW YORK COMIC-CON/MUSEUM RECEPTION WRAP-UP
Three Days in the Big Apple for the Con and Todd's Museum Exhibition
March 03, 2006
Copyright 2014 TMP International, Inc.

The McFarlane Companies were in full force at the first annual New York Comic-Con, February 24-26 at the Jacob Javitz Center. McFarlane staffers, Spawn artist Philip Tan -- and Todd McFarlane himself -- had the opportunity to meet and mingle with an overwhelming number of fans and curious onlookers.

The event represented the company's first appearance at an East Coast convention in quite some time, and offered fans not only a chance to see a number of new products headed their way, but also the opportunity to spend a little time with Todd at our booth, during signings or while attending our special two-hour panel discussion.

Our presence at the Con was highlighted by a number or revelations and unique opportunities, including:

New Products on Display at the McFarlane Companies Booth
  • Three figures from our first series of action figures based on Hanna Barbera's legendary library of characters -- Hong Kong Phooey, Quick Draw McGraw and Tom and Jerry

  • A first-look at two of the dragons from McFarlane's Dragons Series 4 -- the two-headed Berserker Dragon Clan 4 and Komodo Dragon Clan 4 deluxe boxed set

  • The MK-19 Grenade Launcher deluxe boxed set which will be released in conjunction with McFarlane's Military: Redeployed Series 2
Meet-and-Greet Signings with Todd McFarlane and the Spawn Creative Team
  • Over the course of the three-day event, Todd held three signings at the convention center, offering fans a chance to get his autograph, take photos and spend a few moments asking questions and offering feedback.

  • The Friday afternoon and Saturday morning signings were also attended by current Spawn artist, Philip Tan. The Saturday evening signing included Todd and Philip, as well as fan-favorite artist Greg Capullo and editor-in-chief Brian Haberlin.
Todd's Saturday Panel Discussion Highlighted by Spawn/Batman Announcement
  • Showcasing information about a number of upcoming projects, both action- figure and comic-book related, Todd's two-hour panel gave fans the inside scoop on what to expect from the McFarlane Companies throughout 2006.

  • New comics -- The continued release of new trade paperbacks (Spawn, Sam & Twitch, Hellspawn, Spawn Manga), an all-new one-shot special, Godslayer and the possibility of more.

  • The biggest announcement centered on the new Spawn/Batman crossover scheduled for later this year, with story and art by Todd McFarlane and Greg Capullo. The book will be accompanied by a Spawn/Batman statue created by McFarlane Toys and DC Direct.

While at the McFarlane Toys booth, Todd taped an audio interview for the Web site CultureCatch.com. Check it out here: http://www.culturecatch.com/

Overall, the show was a great experience, allowing us to interact with our fans -- both old and new -- and we would like to thank everyone who took the time to stop by the booth. Hopefully we'll see you again next year.

But that's not all...

The opening day of the Con also marked the launch of the "Todd McFarlane: A Retrospective" art exhibit at the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA). The opening night VIP party offered a select number of guests (a nice mix of professionals and fans) to get an advanced look at the exhibit, as well as the unique opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the showroom by Todd, who used the time to offer everyone an insightful and often funny overview of his career.

Following the tour was a brief Q&A and a signing session during which everyone had the chance for a few moments of one-on-one time with Todd.

Todd returned to MoCCA on Saturday night for the public opening -- giving a new group the verbal tour of his career and signing autographs until 2AM.

MoCCA will host "Todd McFarlane: A Retrospective," from Feb. 25 through May 1. The multimedia retrospective exhibit showcasing Todd's art and career will feature artwork and artifacts including original comic art pages, animation cels, character designs and layouts, as well as toy designs and prototypes from the McFarlane Companies archives.

In conjunction with the exhibit, MoCCA will be selling a limited edition T-shirt featuring artwork by Todd, and a special New York Comic-Con limited-edition 3D version of Spawn issue #1 created exclusively for the 2006 MoCCA McFarlane retrospective.

Written and drawn by Todd, this 32-page book has a cover price of $5.95 and includes red/blue 3D glasses! This special book will be available as a Donor Premium (in recognition of donations of $6 or more) at the MoCCA Gift Shop during the run of the McFarlane retrospective exhibit, while supplies last. Proceeds benefit MoCCA.
