MCFARLANE TOYS MEETS THE NHL ALL-STARS
Scanning Session Features the Game's Elite

McFarlane Toys attended the NHL All-Star weekend in Dallas in January, and accomplished two goals during our stay. Fans came by our booth in the NorthPark mall and were able to buy an exclusive Mike Modano figure, but the secondary objective was shrouded in secrecy.

On Monday, Jan. 22, we headed to the lower level of the American Airlines Center and set up our digital scanning equipment to work with the All-Star teams as they were brought to their dressing rooms. Our digital scanner is very high-tech, but the basic execution of the initial scan is fairly simple: the designated person sits on a stool and wears a plastic headband just below his hairline, then the scanning tech runs an imaging wand (it looks like a barcode scanner) up and down the person's face. It takes about five or six passes to completely transfer the person's face to the computer.

Flight delays kept a trio of players from being scanned, but every other player came by and sat in the "hot seat." These digital images will give our amazing sculptors a better starting point for future figures. There's still absolutely no replacement for a talented artist's touch, but the digital scans should help speed up the process.

Photos of the players being scanned include San Jose Sharks centers Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton, New Jersey Devils goalie Martin Brodeur, Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Ed Jovanovski, Colorado Avalanche center Joe Sakic, and New York Rangers left wing Brendan Shanahan. Bear in mind that having a player's scan doesn't necessarily mean there's a Sports Picks figure in the works, but it certainly can't hurt their chances...
