To highlight Alberta's arts community, EPCOR -- a leading provider of power and water services as well as the National Arts Centre -- is currently asking Albertans to name their favorite Alberta artists and performers in an online contest at www.epcor.ca. Voters, who must be residents of Alberta, are automatically entered into the contest to win various prizes.
More than 5,000 entries have already been received. Some familiar -- and some surprising -- names lead the voting:
Todd currently leads the visual artist category. If you don't know, Todd was born in Calgary, Alberta, and first discovered the world of comic books while attending William Aberhart High School.
- Lois Hole, writer
- Ian Tyson and Jann Arden (tied), musician
- Shumka Dancers, dance
- Todd McFarlane, visual artist
- Michael J. Fox, actor
- Vinod Varshney, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, chef
Open to all Albertans over 18, the contest will award a grand prize of a trip for two to the Alberta Scene -- a performance artist festival in Ottawa, the nation's capital -- and many secondary prizes. Two of those secondary prize packages -- to be awarded in April -- are McFarlane-based.
The first is a Spawn package featuring a 12-inch Wings of Redemption Spawn action figure signed by Todd McFarlane, a Spawn Armageddon XBox video game from Namco and Todd McFarlane: The Devil You Know documentary DVD directed by Kenton Vaughan and originally released in 2000 by the National Film Board of Canada.
The second is a McFarlane's Sports Picks package featuring NHL Hockey Legends action figures. There are a total of four sets, each featuring Wayne Gretzky and Grant Fuhr in authentic Edmonton Oilers uniforms.
To be eligible for the Grand Prize drawing, contest entries must be received by March 15, 2005. The contest runs through July 30, 2005.
