Winners Announced in Jersey Contest

In a scene more reminiscent of a star-studded film screening than a press conference, the NHL's Edmonton Oilers unveiled their Todd McFarlane/Brent Ashe-designed third jerseys at the Odyssium Space and Science Museum in Edmonton on Friday, Oct. 26.

As the lights went down in the Margaret Zeidler Star Theater, the capacity audience of local and national media was treated to a spectacular five-minute video presentation explaining the design of the new logo and how it fits into the legacy of the Edmonton Oilers (Click here to see the video.)

After the video faded out, the fog started pouring through the entrance corridor and four Oilers players - team captain Jason Smith and assistant captains Ryan Smyth, Mike Grier and Rem Murray - strode out to the circular stage in the new third jersey. Lit only by black light in the already dark theater, the presentation was stunningly theatrical.

After the unveiling, a press conference ensued during which several folks intimately involved with the new design - Todd McFarlane, Oilers president and CEO Patrick LaForge and GM Kevin Lowe - spoke before taking questions and posing for photographs.

Immediately following the press conference, the new jersey was offered for sale at Champions stores, the official Oilers team shop. More than $300,000 worth were sold over the weekend.

The following night, Saturday, Oct. 27, the Oilers played their first game in the new third jersey, defeating the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in a nationally televised contest. (The team wore the jerseys again on Oct. 30, beating the Montreal Canadiens 3-1.)

According to fans and those in attendance, the new jerseys really looked nice on the ice, particularly on Oilers goalkeeper Tommy Salo, who sported a fresh set of pads that highlighted the color scheme in the uniform.

Following the game, McFarlane and Ashe were invited to join the team in the locker room, where the players were reportedly quite pleased with the new look. Todd even brought Salo some advance toy packaging for his figure appearing in the upcoming McFarlane's Sports Picks: NHL II.

And now, for the moment you've all been waiting for: winners of the Oilers third jersey contest. We had our official staff contest monkey working on this and he's beat. What a volume of entries, almost all of them Canadian!

Anyway, Horace (that's our new contest monkey) randomly selected one grand prize winner from all the correct entries. Correct entries, you ask? Yes, despite the fact that all we asked was that entrants e-mail us their names and mailing addresses, those directions proved too difficult for many. Ah, well, just made the odds sweeter for ... (drum roll)

  • Terence Robertson of Edmonton, who won his very own Oilers third jersey, designed by Todd McFarlane and Brent Ashe.

In addition, 10 runners-up were drawn. They'll each receive an official program from the Oiler-Canucks game, the first game Edmonton played in its new jersey. Those winners are:

  • Scott Bossert of Vermilion, Alberta
  • Andy Arsenault of Burnaby, BC
  • Mike Evans of Toronto, Ontario
  • Raj Boora of Edmonton, Alberta
  • Brian Bolvin of Fairless Hills, PA
  • Bill LaViolette of Houston, Texas
  • Jason Lee of Edmonton, Alberta
  • Barry Freedman of Bethesda, MD
  • Kenten Bowick of Kingman, Alberta
  • Steve Bowcutt of Memphis, TN

Congrats to all the winners and thanks for playing. Your prizes are in the mail.
