Figures a Hit at Metallibash

The two biggest highlights of Metallibash, the first-ever Metallica fan convention, were McFarlane Toys' new Metallica action figures ... and the appearance of drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist Kirk Hammett.

Metallibash, held over Labor Day weekend at the Maritime Hall in San Francisco, drew legions of fans, some from as far away as Turkey. Everyone - even event organizer Susan Gottfried - was thrilled to see the Metallica action figures in person. Twenty lucky folks won Metallica figures, including Jim Keller of Chico, CA, who walked away with a whole set.

Keller, who has been a fan of the band since 1983, said, "I've been waiting for these (action figures) forever. Who else is going to do it other than McFarlane Toys?"

Under the banner "By the fans, of the fans, for the fans," Metallibash was sponsored by KSJO 92.7, Hot Topic and Tama Drums. Metallica fan club chapters from Virginia and San Francisco were represented and the official Metallica Fan Club, which produces the quarterly magazine So What! was there signing new members.

The night culminated with a performance by Creeping Death, a tribute band revered by Metallica fans. An hour and a half into the performance, to top off the night, the band had some VIPs sit in with them on a few songs. That's right, Ulrich and Hammett slid in unannounced and honored the crowd (and the guys in Creeping Death) by jammin' out a few Metallica classics.
